Why we exist

We built the family app we'd let track us

FamilyTracking started with a simple disqualifying test: would we install this on our own phones, visible to our own families, with our own teenagers reading the settings screen? Everything in the product follows from refusing to ship anything that fails it.

The problem we kept seeing

Family location apps split into two unsatisfying camps. One camp monetizes the family itself — free maps subsidized by selling movement data into the advertising and broker economy, which is a strange foundation for a product about protecting your family. The other camp sells covert control: spy tools dressed in safety language, built to be hidden from the person being tracked. Both camps treat trust as an obstacle. We think trust is the product.

So we wrote down three commitments and built a company around them. Consent is architecture, not policy: nobody appears on a FamilyTracking map without installing the app and accepting an invitation on their own device, a visible indicator shows when sharing is active, and there is no covert mode to toggle — it structurally doesn't exist. Subscriptions are the only revenue: no ads, no data sales, no second customer whose interests compete with yours; the free plan is funded by Premium families, not by anyone's coordinates. Symmetry by default: kids can see parents, grandparents can see grandkids, and every rule or alert about a person is visible to that person — because tools imposed in secret get uninstalled, and tools agreed at the kitchen table get kept.

What we're building toward

The roadmap is the same idea extended: better coverage of the moments families actually worry about (new drivers, first solo walks, aging parents living independently), on the devices families actually own (both platforms, old phones, kids' watches), with honesty about limits — pages on this site tell you what crash detection can miss and when a built-in free tool is all you need, because long-term trust beats short-term conversion.

How the principles show up in the product

Principles are cheap until they cost something, so here's where ours do. Consent-as-architecture means we walked away from the largest segment of the tracking market — covert monitoring — and we don't regret the revenue. Symmetry means a teen can watch a parent's commute and forward dad his own speed alert, which makes some parents uncomfortable and makes the system fair. Honesty means feature pages that document failure modes: crash detection that can miss low-speed impacts, web filtering that can't see inside apps, GPS that wobbles indoors. Every one of those admissions costs us a conversion from someone shopping for magic, and earns us a family who arrives with accurate expectations and stays for years.

It also means the free plan is deliberately good. A free tier designed as a frustration funnel — crippled until you pay — would convert better and feel worse. Ours covers a real family's real week (the live map, home-and-school alerts, SOS, chat, battery warnings) because the families who upgrade should do so for the driving year or the grandparents Circle, not to escape artificial pain.

The team, briefly

We're a small, distributed team of parents, adult children of stubborn independent parents, and former teenagers with strong opinions about being tracked. Engineering, support and design sit in the same conversations — the person answering your ticket can file the bug and often has. The product is our family meeting that never ends, and if you'd like to influence it, the contact page reaches real humans: feature requests from real households are where half our roadmap comes from.

The short version

A family map should make a family calmer without making anyone smaller. That's the whole company. Everything else — the 22 features, the encryption, the pricing — is implementation detail.
