Frequently asked questions

Everything people ask before — and after — installing, grouped by topic. Feature-specific questions live on each feature page; setup walkthroughs live in the download guide. If your question survives this page, a human will answer it.

Getting started

What is FamilyTracking?

A consent-based family locator app for Android and iOS. Family members join a private Circle by invitation and share live location, place alerts, SOS and more — with every member seeing exactly who sees them.

How do I get started?

Install the app from Google Play or the App Store, create a free account and a Circle, then send the invite code to your family. Setup takes about five minutes — the download and setup guide has per-platform screenshots.

How many people can join a Circle?

Up to 10 members on every plan. Premium+ adds multiple Circles for families with layers — household, grandparents, carpool.

Does it work if my family mixes Android and iPhone?

Yes, fully — feature parity across Android 8.0+ and iOS 14+ is an engineering policy. Mixed Circles get identical features in every direction.

Do all family members need their own account?

Yes — each person installs the app and joins on their own phone, which is the consent model. Child accounts for under-13s are created and administered by a parent.

Privacy & consent

Can someone be tracked without knowing?

No. Appearing on a map requires installing the app, accepting an invitation and confirming on your own device. A persistent indicator shows while sharing is active, and there is no covert mode anywhere in the product.

Is my family's data sold or shared?

Never — no advertisers, no data brokers, no 'anonymized' resale. Subscriptions are the entire business model, on every plan including free.

How is the data protected?

TLS encryption in transit, encryption at rest with separately managed keys, need-to-know internal access. The encryption and privacy page explains the machinery in plain language.

Can I pause sharing?

Anytime, in one tap, from your own device — and the Circle sees an honest 'Sharing paused' status rather than a fake location.

Can I delete my data?

Yes — a day, a range, or your whole account, self-serve from the app. Deletion removes data from production immediately and from rolling backups within 30 days.

What do you share with law enforcement?

The minimum lawful process requires, with a preference for notifying users where legally permitted. The privacy policy is the governing document.

Accuracy, battery & reliability

How accurate is the tracking?

Typically 5–15 meters outdoors. The app fuses GPS, Wi-Fi and cell signals and displays an honest accuracy ring — wider indoors and downtown — plus a freshness timestamp on every pin.

How much battery does it use?

Roughly 2–5% per day for most users, thanks to motion-aware sampling that sleeps when the phone is still. A Battery Saver mode reduces it further.

What happens when a phone is off or out of signal?

The map holds the last known location with a timestamp and a status badge ('Phone off', 'No signal', 'Sharing paused'). Reconnection updates the pin and back-fills the timeline.

Why did a family member's pin stop updating?

Almost always an OS update reverting one of three settings: background location permission, battery optimization, or Background App Refresh. The app detects and flags all three with a fix-it banner.

Does it work abroad?

Yes — anywhere with GPS and a data connection, in 150+ countries. Roaming data use is a few megabytes per day.

Does it work on smartwatches and GPS tags?

Supported kids' smartwatches and cellular GPS tags join the same map on Premium — the device support page lists current models and exactly what each can do.

Plans & billing

What does the free plan include?

Live map for one Circle, two saved place alerts, 2 days of history, SOS and silent SOS, family chat, check-ins, battery alerts, find-my-phone, last known location and Elderly Care Mode — free forever, no card.

What does Premium add?

Unlimited places, 30 days of history with export, the driving bundle (reports, speed alerts, crash detection), scheduled alerts, the digital-wellbeing tools and smartwatch support — $7.99/month or $79/year per family, with a 7-day trial.

What does Premium+ add?

Everything in Premium plus 90 days of history, multiple Circles and priority support — $12.99/month or $129/year per family.

How do I cancel?

Through your phone's app-store subscription settings, effective at period end. Your Circle drops to free and keeps working; nothing is held hostage.

Is billing per person?

No — per family. One subscription covers the whole Circle, up to 10 members.

Safety & family dynamics

Does SOS call emergency services?

No — SOS alerts your Circle with live location, through silent mode, in seconds. In a life-threatening emergency call your local emergency number first; SOS is how your family finds you alongside that.

Can my teen see the rules and alerts that involve them?

Always — curfew rules, speed thresholds, place alerts and monitoring features are visible to the person they're about. Transparency is enforced by design, and it's why teens keep the app.

Is FamilyTracking suitable for elderly parents?

Yes — Elderly Care Mode offers a simplified big-button interface, one-tap SOS, daily check-ins and inactivity alerts on a normal smartphone, free.

Can kids request check-ins from parents?

Yes — check-ins, chat and the map work symmetrically in every direction. Reassurance flows both ways in a healthy Circle.

How is FamilyTracking different from Life360?

Three commitments: a genuinely useful free plan, strict consent-based transparency with no covert anything, and a subscriptions-only business model — your location data is never part of the revenue.

Where do I get help with something not covered here?

The in-app guide handles setup and troubleshooting with per-OS screenshots; for everything else, the contact page reaches humans who reply within a day.

Troubleshooting

The app asked for 'Allow all the time' location — is that safe?

It's required for the map to work while the app is closed, which is the product. The permission feeds only the Circle sharing you consented to, a persistent indicator shows while it's active, and you can pause or revoke anytime. The download guide explains each platform's permission screens.

Why does an Android phone in our Circle keep going stale?

Aggressive manufacturer battery managers are the usual culprit — they kill background apps to advertise battery life. Set FamilyTracking to 'Unrestricted' in battery settings; the in-app guide has per-brand steps for the stubborn ones.

Alerts arrive late on one iPhone — what's wrong?

Check three things: Background App Refresh is on for FamilyTracking, Low Power Mode isn't permanently enabled (it throttles background work system-wide), and notifications are allowed with banners. The app's fix-it banner diagnoses all three.

GPS shows me across the street at home — can that be fixed?

Indoor positioning leans on Wi-Fi, which has natural offset. Keep Wi-Fi enabled (even unconnected, it improves positioning), enable Precise Location, and size home geofences generously — 150 meters absorbs the wobble completely.

I changed phones — how do I move everything over?

Install the app on the new phone and sign in: Circles, places, rules and history follow the account, including across an Android-to-iPhone switch. Only the new OS's permission prompts need redoing.

Out of questions? Then you're ready.

The free plan answers the rest by demonstration. Five minutes to the family map.
